Welcome
Welcome to the Purple Threads of Hope project! We invite knitters and crocheters to create heartfelt hats, booties, or blankets specifically designed for new parents and caregivers whose babies are part of our Period of PURPLE Crying prevention education program. Every handmade piece is more than just an item; it’s a message of support, safety, and community care.
Why Purple?
The Period of PURPLE Crying is a nationwide educational initiative dedicated to helping parents and caregivers understand infant crying patterns—and, most importantly, how to respond safely. During a baby’s first months, crying episodes can be intense, sometimes lasting for hours. While this is a normal developmental phase, it can be incredibly frustrating for exhausted caregivers. Unfortunately, frustration can sometimes lead to harmful reactions, including shaking a baby, which can result in serious and irreversible injury.
That’s where your knitting and crocheting skills can make a meaningful difference. By creating purple hats, blankets, and booties, you are directly supporting efforts to raise awareness about Shaken Baby Syndrome and prevention strategies. These handmade gifts do more than provide warmth—they serve as tangible reminders for parents and caregivers that crying is temporary, but a child’s safety must always come first.
Every stitch symbolizes support, education, and compassion. Through this initiative, our Prevention Education team uses these lovingly crafted items to start essential conversations about recognizing the dangers of shaking, soothing techniques, and community resources that can help families navigate these challenging moments.
Whether you’re an experienced crafter or picking up your needles for the first time, your contribution is invaluable. Together, we can wrap newborns in safety, understanding, and hope—one purple stitch at a time. Join us in making a lasting impact. Start stitching today!
